COMPARISON

Tuya and IOTMER

Both platforms are designed for device manufacturers that need to connect a product to the cloud. Tuya is distinguished by a ready consumer application and a module package. IOTMER provides the module, the SDK, and open MQTT under a single account.

This comparison is not intended for an end user replacing an existing device. It is written for device manufacturers that want to make a product connected.

IOTMER is an enterprise IoT platform for device manufacturers. A ready ESP32-C3 connectivity module, an ESP32 SDK, and managed Cloud MQTT are provided under the same account.

Tuya addresses the same requirement with its own module, its own cloud, and Smart Life together with OEM application options. The table below sets out the criteria manufacturers evaluate.

Tuya and IOTMER comparison
Tuya IOTMER
Purpose Turning a manufacturer’s product into a connected product with a ready application and the Tuya cloud Connecting a manufacturer’s product to the cloud under the manufacturer’s own brand
Hardware Tuya Wi-Fi module or MCU SDK ESP32-C3 Smart Connectivity Module (Standard and RTC), or the SDK on the manufacturer’s own ESP board
Host-board connection A Tuya module communicates with the host board through Tuya’s module interface UART, GPIO, and I2C. The interface can be customized per project
Cloud Tuya cloud infrastructure IOTMER Cloud MQTT. Operated on our own infrastructure, across global regions
Data location Tuya regional infrastructure The selected IOTMER region. A dedicated region deployment keeps data in that country
Application Smart Life and OEM application options, with ready control screens BLE provisioning in the IOTMER application. The manufacturer’s own application connects over standard MQTT
Protocol Tuya protocol. Matter support on newer modules Standard MQTT. IOTMER cloud or a third-party broker. Separate credentials per device
Local provisioning Through the Tuya application Provisioning and parameter configuration over BLE from the mobile application
Without an internet connection Classic Wi-Fi products depend on the cloud connection. Matter is a separate option for local control The RTC model includes a clock and a rechargeable battery. Automation defined over BLE runs without internet
Field protocols The primary package is aimed at consumer smart-home products A Modbus RTU/TCP gateway on the same account. Energy, access control, appliances, and industrial monitoring
Updates Tuya OTA OTA through the IOTMER cloud
The manufacturer’s own systems Through the Tuya cloud and Tuya APIs Connection to the manufacturer’s own platform with open MQTT credentials

The IOTMER column is based on the product catalog and the platform’s capabilities. The Tuya column summarizes Tuya’s public positioning for manufacturers.

Where each platform is strong

Tuya

  • Smart Life and an OEM application option recognized by a large end-user base
  • A short time to market for standard products such as plugs, bulbs, and switches, with ready screens
  • A mature Wi-Fi module supply chain at high volume
  • Matter support on newer modules
  • Extensive documentation and an integrator network

IOTMER

  • Three integration models on one platform: module, SDK, or MQTT alone
  • Standard MQTT; the module can connect to the IOTMER cloud or to a third-party broker
  • The manufacturer’s own application, or the IOTMER application
  • Offline automation on the RTC model
  • Data retained on our own servers, in the selected region
  • A Modbus gateway on the same account

Which platform fits which requirement

Tuya

Tuya is structured for the requirement of bringing a standard smart-home product to a consumer channel quickly, with ready application screens.

IOTMER

IOTMER is structured for the requirement that the product remain under the manufacturer’s brand, that data stay in a selected region, and that integration proceed through a module, the manufacturer’s own ESP firmware, or MQTT alone.

IOTMER integration models

The IOTMER column cannot be reduced to a single delivery model. The manufacturer selects one of three models. All three connect to the same cloud infrastructure.

Smart Connectivity Module

The ESP32-C3 module is placed on the PCB. The host board communicates over UART, GPIO, or I2C.

Review the module →

ESP32 SDK

The SDK is added to firmware on the manufacturer’s own board. No broker deployment is required.

Cloud MQTT

Teams that already operate an MQTT client can use the managed broker, device identity, and data platform on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is IOTMER a Tuya alternative for device manufacturers?

For a device manufacturer that wants to make a product connected under its own brand, IOTMER is an alternative to the requirement Tuya addresses. The device connects to the cloud through a module or the SDK, and device management together with a mobile application are part of the platform. The MQTT service can also be used on its own. This page is not intended for an end user replacing an existing Tuya device.

What is the principal difference between Tuya and IOTMER?

Tuya connects its module, and the Smart Life or OEM application path, to the Tuya cloud. IOTMER connects an ESP32-C3 module or the ESP32 SDK over standard MQTT to its own regional servers. The module can also be directed to a third-party MQTT broker. On the RTC model, automation continues to run without an internet connection.

Does IOTMER include a mobile application?

Yes. The IOTMER application is for BLE provisioning, parameter configuration, monitoring, and control. If the product experience is delivered in the manufacturer’s own application, that application connects to the same device over standard MQTT.

Where is data retained?

IOTMER servers are operated on our own infrastructure, across global regions, and they are not tied to a third-party cloud account. With a dedicated region deployment, data remains in the selected region.

Which manufacturer profile is a better fit for Tuya?

Manufacturers bringing standard smart-home products to market quickly on a ready consumer application benefit from the Tuya package. Manufacturers that require their own brand, their own data region, and open MQTT evaluate the IOTMER integration models.
