COMPARISON

Tuya, AWS IoT Core, and IOTMER

All three platforms connect a device to the internet. Tuya is a ready module and application package. AWS IoT Core is the managed MQTT layer inside an AWS account. IOTMER addresses both requirements on a single platform.

This comparison is not intended for an end user replacing an existing device. It is written for device manufacturers and cloud teams connecting a product.

IOTMER is an enterprise IoT platform for device manufacturers. A ready ESP32-C3 connectivity module, an ESP32 SDK, and managed Cloud MQTT are provided under the same account.

Tuya closes the requirement with a ready consumer application. AWS IoT Core provides the broker, certificates, and a rules engine. The module, the mobile application, and the OTA flow are developed by the customer’s team. The table reviews the three models under the same headings.

What is included Module, cloud, and ready application screens Managed MQTT, device registry, certificates, Rules Engine, and Device Shadow Module or SDK, broker, device management, mobile application, and OTA
Purpose Turning a standard product into a connected product in a short time Allowing a team already on AWS to establish device connectivity and the data path Connecting the manufacturer’s product to the cloud under its own brand, through the selected integration model
Hardware Tuya Wi-Fi module or MCU SDK No ready Wi-Fi module. Firmware is developed by the manufacturer with FreeRTOS and the IoT Device SDK ESP32-C3 module, or the SDK on the manufacturer’s own ESP board
Application Smart Life and OEM application options No ready end-user application. The application is developed by the customer The IOTMER application, and open MQTT for the manufacturer’s own application
Cloud and data Tuya cloud, in Tuya regions The selected AWS region. Lambda, S3, Kinesis, and IAM on the same account Our own servers, across global regions. A dedicated region can be requested
Protocol Tuya protocol. Matter on newer modules MQTT and HTTPS. X.509 certificates and IAM policies Standard MQTT, credentials per device. A third-party broker can be used
Provisioning Tuya application and module pairing Fleet provisioning and the certificate flow are designed by the customer Provisioning over BLE from the mobile application. An existing MQTT client can connect directly to the broker
Without an internet connection Matter is a separate option for local control Edge operation with Greengrass. A ready RTC module is not part of this service Clock, rechargeable battery, and offline automation on the RTC model
Adjacent services Tuya APIs and the application marketplace The rest of AWS. Data path, identity, and billing remain in one account Device management, a data API, and a Modbus gateway. ERP connectivity over MQTT or API

The IOTMER column is based on the product catalog and the platform’s capabilities. The Tuya and AWS IoT Core columns summarize the public positioning of those products.

Where each platform is strong

Tuya

  • A short package for a standard consumer product: module, cloud, and screens
  • A recognized end-user application and an OEM application path
  • Module supply at high volume, and Matter support on the newer generation

AWS IoT Core

  • A single AWS account with Lambda, S3, Kinesis, Timestream, Greengrass, and IAM
  • Global scale and mature compliance programs
  • Detailed control of certificates, policies, and rules
  • A natural data path for cloud teams that already operate on AWS

IOTMER

  • A module placed on the PCB, a BLE provisioning application, and OTA within the same product scope
  • Teams that only require managed MQTT can use that model separately
  • Data is retained in the selected region, on our own servers
  • Open MQTT for the manufacturer’s own application and for a third-party broker
  • A Modbus gateway on the same account

Which platform fits which requirement

Tuya

When a consumer product with ready screens must reach the market in the shortest time, Tuya provides that package ready to ship.

AWS IoT Core

When the data path, identity, and operations already run on AWS, and the module and application will be developed by the customer’s team, AWS IoT Core is the connectivity layer for that work.

IOTMER

When the product ships under the manufacturer’s brand, connects through a module or the SDK, and data must remain in a selected region, IOTMER covers those requirements on one platform. If only a broker is required, the Cloud MQTT model can be used.

IOTMER integration models

AWS IoT Core provides a single layer: managed connectivity. IOTMER also provides a module and an SDK alongside the connection. All three models connect to the same cloud infrastructure.

Smart Connectivity Module

The ESP32-C3 module is placed on the PCB. The host board communicates over UART, GPIO, or I2C.

Review the module →

ESP32 SDK

The SDK is added to firmware on the manufacturer’s own board. No broker deployment is required.

Cloud MQTT

Teams that already operate an MQTT client can use the managed broker, device identity, and data platform on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is IOTMER a Tuya alternative for device manufacturers?

Yes, for a device manufacturer that wants to make a product connected under its own brand. IOTMER provides a module, an SDK, Cloud MQTT, device management, and a mobile application together. It is not an alternative to a finished Tuya device in an end user’s home.

Is IOTMER an alternative to AWS IoT Core?

On the MQTT layer, yes. Teams that require a managed broker, device identity, and a regional server connect their own client to Cloud MQTT. The Lambda, S3, and IAM ecosystem around AWS IoT Core is not what IOTMER replaces. IOTMER additionally provides a connectivity module placed on the PCB, a BLE provisioning application, and OTA. AWS IoT Core does not offer that package as a product.

Why does AWS IoT Core not include a ready module?

AWS IoT Core is a connectivity and rules service. Firmware, provisioning, the mobile application, and the OTA flow are within the customer’s engineering scope. IOTMER also provides those components as a module and an application. Teams that do not require them can proceed with the MQTT model alone.

Which option fits data residency?

Tuya retains data on its own regional infrastructure. AWS IoT Core retains data in the selected AWS region. IOTMER retains data on its own servers, across global regions. A dedicated region deployment is requested separately.

Can one product use both the module and the manufacturer’s own application?

On an IOTMER module, provisioning is completed over BLE with the IOTMER application. If the product experience lives in the manufacturer’s application, that application connects to the same device over standard MQTT. Each module has its own MQTT credentials, and a third-party broker can be selected.
